Deals & Cases[Cross-border Inheritance] Assisting a U.S. Citizen in Locating Inherited Financial Assets in Korea

SOMA represented a U.S. citizen in investigating the inherited financial assets of her late mother, who was also a U.S. citizen residing in Korea at the time of her passing. The heir, living in the United States, sought to identify her mother’s assets held in Korean financial institutions through the official heir financial inquiry procedure.

Before engaging SOMA, the heir had attempted to file the application in person at a local community center in Korea but was denied on the grounds of foreign nationality. Drawing on our understanding of the relevant administrative framework, SOMA demonstrated that foreign nationals are eligible to submit such applications and proceeded to prepare all required documents and handle the process on behalf of the client. As a result, the heir was able to confirm financial assets worth hundreds of millions of Korean won without having to visit Korea.

In most cases, financial inquiry results become available within approximately three weeks, and it is common for previously unknown accounts or insurance policies to be discovered during the process.

With extensive experience in inheritance-related administrative procedures, SOMA provides end-to-end guidance to ensure that applications are completed and accepted without additional documentation. Beyond verifying inherited assets, SOMA also assists foreign citizens and overseas residents in efficiently and securely completing subsequent inheritance procedures in Korea.
